Welcome for riverside energy plant

A strong welcome for the Government announcement on the new energy from waste facility has come from the Port of London Authority.

Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks today announced that he has granted consent to Cory Environmental to build an energy from waste facility on the side of the Thames at Belvedere in Bexley. This will be London's first river-served energy from waste facility. This is designed to process up to 585,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year, which would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Port of London Authority chief executive Richard Everitt said:

"We are especially pleased that waste will arrive at the facility primarily by barges using the Thames. This is excellent news for the river and our continuing efforts to make more use of the Thames. It is also good news for London's over crowded roads, by helping to reduce lorry movements."
