Thames Clippers Proud to Help London Keep Moving on 07/07

Following the severe transport problems caused by the terrorist attacks of 07 July, Thames Clippers helped approximately 20,000 commuters make their journey home by extending its Riverline services until midnight on Thursday and following agreement by Transport for London offered free travel from central London on all stops along the Thames.

With many tube lines and bus routes closed, the river was the only realistic alternative for many passengers seeking to get home. Queues at piers often numbered in excess of 500 people but passengers remained patient and orderly. In the early afternoon the majority of passengers were moved westbound from Canary Wharf to mainline stations and interchanges at Blackfriars, London Bridge and Waterloo. Later in the afternoon and evening the service was at full stretch to take commuters from Savoy Pier (Embankment – near Cleopatra’s Needle) downriver to Greenwich and Royal Arsenal Woolwich.

Sean Collins, Thames Clippers Managing Director, praised both the passengers and the crew.

'Working with Transport for London we were pleased to play our part in keeping Londoners on the move. Despite long waits passengers were calm, patient and grateful for the service supplied by the Thames Clippers staff who worked tirelessly to ensure commuters got home. I am very proud of their efforts’.

In total Thames Clippers ran an additional 73 services, making as sure as possible that commuters had been able to get out of central London. Those who travelled were generous in their comments, both on the day, and equally on Friday 8th when the Thames Clippers office and web site received continual messages of thanks.
