Summer safety reminder

The unprecedented heatwave, coinciding with the end of the school year, has led to river safety champions to issue a call not to underestimate the risks involved in taking to the tidal Thames to cool off.

With then mercury rising to record levels, the RNLI and the Port of London Authority (PLA) are calling on the public to enjoy the river safely this summer.

PLA harbour master, Darren Knight, said: The river’s twice-daily, tidal rise and fall of up to seven metres, combined with its rapid flow, can take even the most experienced, strongest swimmers by surprise.

“River traffic and hidden underwater infrastructure also pose a serious hazard to anyone who finds themselves in the Thames’ waters in central London.

“Even in the height of summer, the river’s temperature can also be cold enough for the human heart to be overcome by cold water shock.

“Lidos or leisure centres are much safer places to seek refuge from soaring temperatures.”

Top tips

  • Always swim in a safe place.
  • Swim with others, not alone. Younger children should always be within arm’s reach.
  • Float to live: If you find yourself in trouble in the water, lie on your back like a starfish, to help keep yourself buoyant. This will allow you to control your breathing, then call for help, or swim to safety.
  • If you spot someone in the water in trouble, don’t jump in yourself to attempt a rescue – it could lead to you losing your life. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
  • Stay well away from the foreshore, if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you see someone in distress in the water, CALL 999 and ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD. Throw a life buoy if possible. Never enter the water.
