Quality awards for Port of London Authority
Continued work by the Port of London Authority (PLA) to ensure high standards in its activities all along the Thames has been recognised by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) - the international certification body.
LRQA has this week presented the PLA with two key certificates. The first – ISO 14001 – underlines the commitment of the PLA to good environmental practices throughout every area of its work and formally demonstrates that the PLA environmental management system meets this internationally recognised standard. The environmental management system is central to PLA environmental policy and includes a commitment to continual improvement.
The second certificate – ISO 9001 – demonstrates that the PLA’s quality management system is continuing to successfully meet the requirements of the international standard right across the organisation. The PLA has been meeting the requirements of ISO 9001 for over nine years.
The two certificates were handed over by Mike James, LRQA UK general manager at a presentation at the PLA offices in Gravesend.
Richard Everitt, PLA chief executive said:
"The Port of London Authority has always worked to achieve good standards and respect for the environment. These two certificates now demonstrate that the modern systems we have in place right across all areas of our work meet the highest international standards. This is part of ensuring continual improvement in the service we give to all users of the tidal Thames – a total of some 95 miles.”

The Port of London Authority is the port authority for 150km (95 miles) of the tidal Thames from the sea to Teddington. It provides navigational, pilotage and other services for ships using the Port of London.
