OPDR Expands Service at Tilbury
Increase in Canaries service calls at London Container Terminal
Short-sea shipping and logistics specialist Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei (OPDR) has announced today (7 January 2014) an expansion to their existing service to Tilbury’s, London Container Terminal (LCT).
In November last year, LCT announced an agreement with OPDR to handle over 200 calls per annum for OPDR services on their routes between the Iberian Peninsula including the Canary Islands, North Africa and the UK.
Starting in week two of January 2014, additional OPDR services will include a further two calls per week of the CISS - Canary Island Services to Tilbury.
OPDR’s recently launched Bilbao service which sees four vessels, each with a capacity of 700 TEU, on a weekly service connecting Bilbao with Tilbury within two transit days, was the first call which moved to Tilbury in December with a delivery of potatoes onboard the MV OPDR Cadiz.
Chief Executive Officer of OPDR, Till Ole Barrelet, said: “We are looking forward to consolidating all our services to London Container Terminal and to developing our cooperation further.”
Commenting on the expansion, Perry Glading, Chief Operating Officer of Forth Ports (owners of London Container Terminal) said: “We are enjoying working with OPDR and this expansion of their services is testament to London Container Terminal’s perfect shipping location for OPDR’s short-sea services.”
LCT handles in excess of half a million containers per year, and is the only UK port truly servicing both deep sea and short sea customers.

About London Container Terminal
- Forth Ports acquired fully Tilbury Container Terminal in January 2012, having bought out then joint owners DP World and Associated British Ports. Now rebranded as London Container Terminal, it is the UK’s third largest container port.
