MCA Media Release: London Coastguard Assist Vessel Stuck Under Battersea Bridge

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) have issued the following media release:

London Coastguard assisted a coaster this evening after it became stuck under Battersea Road Bridge. The vessel ‘James Prior’ called the Coastguard at 5.35 pm this afternoon to report the accident. There were three crew on board, none of whom were injured. The wheelhouse was severely damaged, but there was no pollution.

London Coastguard requested the launch of the Chiswick and Tower Lifeboats. In addition the Fire and Rescue Service vessel ‘Fire Dart’ and police attended the scene. The Port of London Authority patrol launch ‘Ravensbourne II’ was also on scene. In accordance with normal procedure, the master of the vessel was breathalysed by the Port of London Authority and the test was negative.

Frank Aubin-Hart, London Coastguard Watch Manager says:

“The vessel was successfully towed out from under the bridge by the tug ‘Rose Steel’ and is now safely alongside. All search and rescue assets have now departed the area. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed. We have been working with the Port of London Authority who are now launching an investigation.”
