London Shipowners' and River Users' Society Media Release
The 184th Annual General Meeting of the London Shipowners’ and River Users’ Society was held on 31st March 2011.
Speaking after the meeting, Chairman Mike Harrison said:
“This is an important year for the Society as we celebrate our bicentenary. Much has changed since a group of London shipowners came together at the beginning of the 19th century to discuss matters of common concern. Over the years, operating ships has become more complex. Nevertheless, the underlying principles are unchanged. All depends on shipowners finding and carrying suitable cargo without freight earnings being eroded by high costs.
"Keeping costs under control is an important part of our work. The Society campaigns for a cost-effective environment in London to encourage the provision of services at reasonable rates. Quality of services is another aspect of our work together with monitoring and commenting on regulatory matters and all manner of day-to-day questions and problems.
"Over the years, the Society’s rôle has broadened beyond the original shipowner constituency. Our membership today compromises a wide cross-section of port and river users. We have been looking after members’ interests for two hundred years. We look forward to continuing that rôle.”

- Founded in 1811, the Society is one of the oldest organisations representing shipping interests, Membership of the Society is open to companies involved in shipping and port activities and includes shipping companies, ships’ agents and terminal/wharf operators.
