Ian Moncrieff to Join Port of London Authority Board

Ian Moncrieff CBE has been appointed as non-executive director on the Port of London Authority (PLA) Board.

Ian Moncrieff is chief executive of the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), a post he has held since 2011, having been with the UKHO in a variety of roles, including UK National Hydrographer as a Rear Admiral since 2006. He served with the Royal Navy for almost 35 years, accumulating over 20 years’ seagoing experience in 11 warships. His senior roles have included commander British Forces South Atlantic; he commanded the ice-breaker HMS Endurance and destroyer HMS Nottingham; he was executive officer, HMS Invincible.

He will join the PLA on 1 January 2015, replacing Rodney Lenthall, who will be stepping down from the PLA Board on 31 December 2014, on completion of his six-year term.

PLA chairman, Dame Helen Alexander said:

“I am delighted that we will be welcoming Ian to the PLA Board. His broad marine expertise is ideally suited to our role, working to achieve a vibrant, safe and sustainable tidal Thames."

“Rodney will leave with our heartfelt thanks, for all his support and challenge, including during the planning of the largest flotilla ever seen on the Thames: the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant.”

Ian Moncrieff has a degree in Geography and Geology, is a younger brother of Trinity House, member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, freeman of the City of London and trustee of Falklands Conservation.


Notes to editors:

  • Ian Moncrieff was appointed to the PLA Board by the Secretary of State for Transport.
  • The PLA oversees navigational safety on 95 miles of the tidal Thames, from Teddington Lock to the North Sea. The river is home to the second biggest port in the UK, the busiest inland waterway for freight, passengers and a centre for sporting events.

  • There are over 230,000 commercial and leisure vessel movements on the Thames every year. The commercial vessels provide trade links between London and over 80 countries around the world, from Chile to Mauritius, Honduras to Fiji.
