Mark Solomon

Q. How are you finding the training?

A. The training is well structured and organised. Whilst the large part is ‘tripping’ I still find this enjoyable due to the different ship types, berths, tidal flows and over 120 pilots providing knowledge, experience and opportunity to develop.

In addition to tripping there are several simulator sessions which provide very effective exercises to develop your pilotage skills that are required.

There are several other days and training courses mixed in, so the 7 months is fairly intense with 3 exams and a final assessment to successfully authorise you as a PLA Pilot. A strong commitment is required throughout.

Q. What do you like about the job so far?

A. Hands on handling of various ship types and the privilege of gaining a in depth knowledge, of one of the most challenging pilotage districts. All the Pilots are great to work with and there is a good work culture in general across the PLA.

Q. What’s the most interesting ship you’ve been on?

A. One 70m ship had 3 rudders! Dredger types are varied and interesting – including Spud Posts. The required tug tripping also proves to be an interesting experience.

Q. How did you find the application process when you applied?

A. Straight forward with clear communication throughout.

Q. What advice would you have for anyone considering applying?

A. If you are committed to becoming a Pilot, there is no better career option than the PLA.

Cameron Ruxton

Q. How are you finding the training?

A. The training is intense but very well structured. The pilots have all been very helpful in sharing their knowledge and experience with me.

Q. What do you like about the job so far?

A. PLA covers a large district with various ships coming in and out every day. I enjoy the variety as no two trips are the same.

Q. What’s the most interesting ship you’ve been on?

A. I have been on such a variety of ships since I joined and it’s impossible to pick just one. Every trip has been interesting for me.

Q. How did you find the application process when you applied?

A. The application process was straight forward and the communication from PLA was very good.

Q. What advice would you have for anyone considering applying?

A. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and would recommend anyone thinking about a career in pilotage to apply at the PLA.

Tim Coutts

Q. How are you finding the training?

A. I have enjoyed the training so far as it is intensive but well structured. The training is balanced between tripping on ships with Pilots, simulator sessions and other practical training days. The theoretical side is completed via self-study which is supported well by the wider team and studying with the other trainee Pilots in your intake helps.

Q. What do you like about the job so far?

A. The continual variation of vessels and berths as well as the size of the district. They are not only interesting but also challenging. I like the long-term progression as well as personal development in this career move. When authorised I will be given a working pattern which can allow me to plan my personal life for years in advance. Something I have not had as a seafarer before!

Q. What’s the most interesting ship you’ve been on?

A. One of the most interesting 'trips' so far was from Tower Bridge out to sea as this highlighted the size of the London district, as well as the importance of the maritime trade on the River Thames.

Q. How did you find the application process when you applied?

A. The application process was straightforward which was followed by interview that included a simulator run. The website has a lot of relevant information for the application & interview process, as well as the training program & onward development. However, any questions you still have can be answered at interview.

Q. What advice would you have for anyone considering applying?

A. If pilotage is a career move that you are looking to take, then the PLA offers a great package & a long-term interesting career.

The PLA website will be invaluable resource:

No. Our recruitment intakes and training periods are arranged well in advanced.

You get 28 days leave per year and this will be pro rata’d at your start date. The maximum leave you can take during your training period is 10 days.
