Shipping Green Tariff
Since 2017, international and domestic ships calling at the Port of London can qualify for a discount to their conservancy charges.
A discount is automatically applied to vessels registered under the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) with a score over a certain level to incentivize calls by cleaner vessels. Details of the eligibility and the discount applied can be found under PLA’s Charges.
The ESI scheme is one of the projects within World Ports Sustainability Program (WPSP) that was founded by the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) to enhance and coordinate future sustainability efforts of ports worldwide and foster international cooperation with partners in the supply chain.
The scheme identifies seagoing ships that perform better in reducing air emissions than required by the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and it is based on factors including emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, particulates, and carbon dioxide as well as its capability to connect to on-shore power supply.
The Green Tariff has made the Port of London the first UK port to recognise ship owners committed to progressively improving the environmental performance of their fleet. Eligibility for the Green Tariff is based on a ship's individual score under the Environmental Ships Index (ESI) scheme. To qualify, a vessel must be registered under the ESI scheme and have an ESI score of a certain level. Details of the eligibility and the discount applied can be found under PLA’s Charges.
The ESI is relying on self declaration and does not require verification or certification by third parties. Once data is submitted, the score is automatically calculated and maintained. The ESI vessel list is updated on the first of each quarter and supplied to the PLA. Discounts will be automatically applied to the vessel conservancy invoices of compliant vessels once that vessel appears on the list. The removal of a ship from the list is recorded immediately and discounts will accordingly be stopped in the same way.
