About the Vision Project

The Thames is the largest open space running through the heart of London and a key transport artery, with passenger connections from east to west and access to major trade and freight terminals in Essex and Kent. The Port of London Authority keeps navigational channels open across the tidal Thames, running 95 miles from Teddington to the sea, and as a Trust Port aims to make the most of the river and improve it for future generations.

The PLA works with stakeholders to increase the use of the Thames in a safe and sustainable way across our shared Thames Vision goals for Trade, Freight, Passenger Transport, Sport, Culture and Environmental sustainability. The Thames is central to improving quality of life - as a place for recreation, a source of employment and supporting the better functioning of cities and places through innovation in transport and logistics for a less congested and cleaner future.

The PLA is developing a new vision for the Thames, to be shaped with customers, strategic partners, river users and stakeholders. This will support the net zero transition and respond to challenges as well as harness opportunities arising from global, social and economic changes.
