Thames Rowing Club scoops tenth annual Rowing Safety Award

Thames Rowing Club has won the tenth Port of London Authority (PLA) annual Rowing Safety Award, along with a £1,250 cash prize during a ceremony at their club in Putney.

Speaking at the event, PLA chief harbour master, Bob Baker said:

“This prize was introduced to encourage clubs to adopt the Code of Practice for Rowing on the Tideway when it was introduced in 2006. A decade later, we have more people enjoying rowing on the Tideway in greater safety than before. It’s testimony to the dedication of the clubs to adopt and embed the principles of the Code in all they do.”

The Code of Practice for Rowing was developed by the PLA and Thames Regional Rowing Council (TRRC). It is given to the club that tops the TRRC’s league table of the safest clubs on the tidal Thames.

Tony Reynolds,TRRC regional water safety officer, said:

“The TTRC are grateful to the PLA for supporting the annual safety awards. Congratulations to Thames Rowing Club on a great job this past year. We want all Thames rowers following the safety guidelines, looking out for their own safety and the safety of others.”

Stephen Dooley, Thames Rowing Club chairman said:

“I want to thank the PLA and TRRC for supporting this initiative and to congratulate our coaches and members on making safety a priority.”

The runner-up for the annual award was Fulham Reach Boat Club who opened earlier this year. They received a £750 cash prize. In his speech, Bob Baker highlighted Cygnet Rowing Club’s achievement since the awards started, having won it three times and placing in the top five every year.

Working with local clubs, the TRRC and PLA produced an updated Rowing Code of Practice booklet last year. The more user-friendly guide provides the rowing community with a single comprehensive source of information and advice for rowing on the Tidal Thames.
