Thames Lens 2017 Announcement

Thames Festival Trust Press Release

Thames Festival Trust in partnership with the Port of London Authority is proud to announce that this year’s Thames Lens photography competition is now open.

Thames Lens invites non-professional photographers to travel onto and by river to capture unique shots of the River Thames that respond to a brief.

This year we introduce an Instagram category to the competition, allowing users to easily submit images or moving Gifs via the app.

The River Thames is London’s largest open space and central to many the communities surrounding it.

This year, the judges are looking for unique and interesting images that respond to the themes of river, community and identity, through which we hope will bring the diverse and rich Thames to life and reflect on what it means to London’s communities. Head out and explore London’s most photogenic asset and consider how it interacts with and impacts on everyday life.

We will be planning some exciting events around the competition, and collaborating with Instagrammer and blogger Jess Henderson.

Enter your photograph to win some great prizes including a thrilling Thames Rocket trip down the river, a unique flight above the city with The London Helicopter, tickets to board the Cutty Sark, the chance to be exhibited in an online virtual reality gallery and more. Winning images must respond thoughtfully to the themes, be well composed, and contain eye catching imagery.

Director of Thames Festival Trust, Adrian Evans, says “Thames Lens is an open invitation for digital snappers of all ages to capture the quirky and multifaceted relationship between people and the River Thames. So go East and go West in fair weather and foul and explore and snap something about the Thames that will surprise us. We’re looking forward to seeing your photographs!”

Thames Lens is supported by the Port of London Authority. Alistair Gale, Director of Corporate Affairs says "We work on the Thames every day, seeing it in all lights, in all weathers. Thames Lens is about prompting people to turn their eyes to the river, to see it afresh. The competition provides an excellent opportunity to capture the sheer variety of activity on the river, to snatch its stunning sunrises and wildlife, or record the excitement of taking to the water for the first time.”

To enter Thames Lens, read the brief, full terms and conditions here and submit your entries by Friday 29 September.
