Port of London Authority statement: MAIB Report

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has welcomed the publication of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch’s (MAIB) report into the accident last October in which pilot Gordon Coates lost his life. Gordon was fatally injured as he attempted to board the cargo vessel Sunmi, in Gravesend Reach on 5 October 2016.

Chief executive, Robin Mortimer, said:

“Gordon’s death was a huge shock to the whole organisation. We completed our own investigation within a month and the findings of the MAIB report mirror our own; by the end of last year we had made a number of improvements to our operations as the result of our investigation. There are no recommendations for further PLA action in the MAIB report. We will be studying the MAIB report in detail to ensure that any lessons are learnt.

“Our thoughts remain with Gordon’s family and friends who are deeply affected by his loss.”
