PLA Services

PLA operates a series of specialised services - boat lift; diving; salvage and hydrography - in order to fulfill its duties on the River. These facilities can periodically be available for hire by third parties, provided they are not being used by the PLA. For information, please click on the link below -

A dockway at Denton Wharf is independently served by a 70-tonne capacity boat-lift where craft can be lifted out of the water and taken ashore for maintenance on adjacent level ground. 

Salvage ServicesSalvage operations in the Thames












Two specialised heavylift craft – ‘Crossness’ and ‘Hookness’ (both maintained in class with Lloyds Register) – are operated by the PLA as part of its Marine Services and have the capacity to lift wrecks weighing up to 240 tonnes.

We employ eight commercially qualified divers who support many aspects of the work undertaken by PLA Marine Services, particularly hydrographic and salvage operations.

Operating three specialist vessels, our Hydrographic Service undertakes regular surveys of all the main channels in the tidal River Thames, providing vital information on depths and tides, as well as locating and marking any sunken obstructions.
