Health and Safety
We recognise that health & safety is of the utmost importance and that a good safety performance is fundamental to an efficient organisation. We also recognise that our employees are our most important asset and strive to improve health & safety performance in line with appropriate developments in this field.
To achieve and maintain compliance with statutory requirements, we continue to liaise with regulatory bodies such as the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA). This is in part achieved through regular attendance and input via meetings such as those conducted byPort Skills and Safety (PSS).
We employ a ‘Competent’ person in the role of Health & Safety Adviser, supported by external bodies such as the PSS and advice from regulatory agencies. The role of the ‘Competent’ person is to advise on health and safety issues, analyse new or modified legislation, co-ordinate a programme of health & safety audits and maintain current knowledge of health & safety developments and statutory requirements.
Our approach to health & safety is founded on our three-point Golden Rules to:
- look after one another’s safety
- comply with the law, standards and procedures
- intervene in unsafe or non-compliant acts
These Golden Rules shape our approach and employee involvement, through regular safety committee meetings and risk assessment procedures which enable systematic identification of hazards and the assessment and control of risks to which employees and others may be exposed.
We use a health & safety management system to track and help us continuously improve performance. The system is certificated to the standard OHSAS18001 by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance.
Our Health & Safety Policy is reviewed on an annual basis by the chief executive and the PLA Board. There is one Quality Safety Audit undertaken every year, supported by a rolling programme of Workplace Inspections involving Line Managers and Safety Representatives to ensure operational systems are safe and suitably maintained.
In accordance with legislation we record and investigate every accident on our premises or to staff and report, as appropriate, to the HSE and MCA in compliance with statutory requirements.
